Understanding the Journey

Living a “simple” lifestyle as a parent of a child with special needs feels like navigating uncharted waters. Each day presents new challenges, often unpredicted. I know this to be especially true for parents of children with epilepsy, autism, or developmental delays. Balancing work and family life while addressing the unique needs of your child requires adaptability, persistence, and hope!

Finding Balance

Finding balance as a working parent raising a child with special needs is often less about perfection and more about honoring the full spectrum of who you are. Your child deserves your love, advocacy, and presence, but YOU also deserve fulfillment beyond caregiving. Pursuing a career that brings purpose and joy is not selfish (in my opinion!); it can be an essential part of sustaining your energy, identity, and resilience. Balance may not always look equal, and some seasons demand more in one area than another, but true fulfillment can come from recognizing that caring deeply for your child and investing in your own dreams can coexist—and even strengthen one another.

Helpful Resources and Support

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that no parent is meant to do this alone. Building a life that supports both your child’s needs and your family’s well-being often means relying heavily on outside resources, trusted friends, helpful tools, and professional support. Reaching the right level of support can be a long and challenging process… one filled with trial, error, and difficult decisions about what truly helps versus what pulls you away from your bigger goals. It takes time to identify the people, programs, and systems that genuinely move your family forward. But when you find the right support team, progress becomes possible. The right help doesn’t remove every challenge, but it can provide the clarity, strength, and stability needed to navigate daily life with greater confidence and purpose.
